Updated: Nov 7, 2023

Hello, Cocoonettes!

For those of you who like to do things with your hands, who want to create or who like clothes, we have the perfect new hobby for you!

Crochet is a beautiful craft that perfectly complements the homebody lifestyle. It's a relaxing and therapeutic activity and allows you to create beautiful and functional items for your home. If you've ever wanted to learn how to crochet, this beginner's guide will help you start your journey to creating cozy and handcrafted treasures for your home.

First Step: gather your supplies

Before diving into the crochet world, gathering the necessary supplies is essential. Fortunately, you won't need much to get started.

The two most essential items are the yarn and the hook. Those are the center of crochet. You might want to choose a soft yarn in your favourite colour. With that, select an appropriate-sized crochet hook corresponding to your thread. Sharp scissors will be needed to cut the cord. A yarn needle is an excellent help to weave in the ends and sew pieces together, but if you want a budget-friendly option, it is not necessary. Finally, a measuring tape can be needed if you have to keep track of the size of your new project.

Almost everything can be found on https://www.yarncanada.ca/ or even on https://www.amazon.ca.

Second Step: learn the basic stitches

The foundation of crochet lies in mastering a few basic stitches. So before starting a project, we would recommend trying 3 of the fundamental stitches:

  • Chain stitch: one of the most important ones, used as a starting point for almost every crochet project

  • Single stitch: the simplest stitch in crochet

  • Double stitch: broader than the single stitch, one of the most common crochet stitches

Third Step: start small

The world of crochet is immense, and trying intricate projects will seem tempting. However, we do recommend to start small. Usually, people start with the beanie, which is easy and repetitive.

Crocheting is a skill that improves with practice. Don't be discouraged if your initial attempts don't turn out perfectly.

Fourth step : get creative!

Now that you know the basic, the world of crochet is at your feet. It is now time to get creative and to go further. There is so many stitches to learn, so many projects to do, and so many new things to create !

Learning how to crochet is a creative and rewarding endeavor. With a few simple supplies, patience, and a bit of practice, you can create beautiful, handcrafted items that enhance the coziness of your home. So, grab your yarn, pick up your crochet hook, and begin your journey into the world of crochet for a truly fulfilling and relaxing pastime.
